In his recent Classic Rock presents ... Prog interview one of the things Alex Lifeson mentions being involved with during Rush's break from recording/touring is Apple's GarageBand software. GarageBand is a software application that allows users to create music or podcasts, and is included in all shipments of iLife. The most recent version of the software (iLife '09) includes music instruction, allowing users to buy instructional videos by several popular artists such as Sting, Norah Jones and Ben Folds. In the interview Alex describes how he recorded some instructional videos for the software. Alex's GarageBand Learn To Play Artist Lessons for Tom Sawyer and Limelight are now available for purchase as announced earlier today via Rush.com:

If you have GarageBand '09 on your Mac and you have always wanted to learn how to play guitar like Alex, well now's your chance. Apple just released another GarageBand Learn To Play Artist Lesson, this time featuring Alex teaching how to play Tom Sawyer and Limelight. In Limelight, after teaching you the classic opening riff of this song, he shows you the distinctive open chord voicings and arpeggios for the verse and chorus, and finishes with a close look at his haunting solo. In Tom Sawyer, he first shows you a simple way to play the intro riff, then breaks down the entire song, explaining his innovative chord voicings and solo techniques. Once you are ready, jam right along with the original backing tracks! You can purchase and download each of these lessons directly from the Lesson Store in GarageBand '09. Check it out.

The guitar used in this session is also up for auction as part of the Grapes Under Pressure charity initiative. click here to bid!

This explains the mysterious secret session alluded to in the descriptions of the items up for sale as part of the Grapes Under Pressure charity auction. In his interview Alex had also mentioned recording lessons for The Spirit of Radio and Working Man but apparently those are not yet available. For more information about GarageBand, visit Apple's website at this link. Thanks to axe for the heads up.
