Rush Blog Roundup

Tue, May 2, 2006@10:25AM | comments removed/disabled

It is time once again for my periodic Rush blog roundup where I collect various and sundry Rush-related posts from throughout the blogospheres. Enjoy.

Alex explains why he thinks that Moving Pictures is one of his favorite albums as far as production goes:

All those ultra-hipsters "too cool" for Canadians (not that I can blame 'em...again, JUST KIDDING!) who dismiss this as "too sterile" are "too lame." Just because you can hear EVERYTHING does not make an album sterile; it makes it well-produced. Plus, with a band like Rush you want to hear everything they play. The fact that Neil Peart's entire drumset (which is the size of Nebraska) is audible alone says something about the sonic goodness of this disc.

Ron at Purple Microdot reminisces about frisbees and getting backstage at a 1975 Rush concert:

I went to a Rush concert (special guest Ted Nugent) and I carried in a Frisbee hidden under my jacket. I went to the top of the arena and let it fly into the crowd. As I was watching it sail into the crowd, a uniformed Sheriff grabbed my collar from behind, whirled me 180 degrees so that I was facing him. He grabbed the front collar of my coat with both hands, smiled at me, and then pushed me backwards down the concrete stairs. I fell down about 12 stairs on my back, got up and watched him calmly walk away after the crowd turned around to see who pushed me. Luckily I wasn't hurt. This was my first concert where I was buzzed on Michelob Dark beer. Acid and weed had not entered my world yet. My friend won 2 backstage passes from a radio call-in contest. We showed the bouncer at the rear of the stage our passes and got in. Rush was already about 10 minutes into their set and we had a fantastic view at stage level about 3 yards from Alex Lifeson! After about 2 minutes another bouncer walked up to us and asked to see our passes. Stupid us! We gave them to the other bouncer instead of peeling them off and sticking them on our shirts. We were kicked out immediately. Live & Learn. Anyway......it was a VERY COOL 2 minutes.

Minnesota Twins fan Buck watched his team lose their opener to the Blue Jays but at least he spotted Geddy Lee:

The highlight of the night had to be Geddy Lee from Rush sitting behind home plate and watching the game. After doing some research it turns out Lee lives in Toronto and is a huge baseball fan. He's even talked about buying a Minor League team. The dudes at Batters Box even have a Blue Jays drinking game, in the Comments someone mentions taking a drink if Geddy Lee is sitting behind home plate. Something to look for when the Jays are on TV I guess.

I wonder if Geddy knows about the drinking game.

Matt Getz is pleased to discover that Geddy Lee is Jewish:

We all know that Bob Dylan, Barry Manilow and the Beastie Boys are Jewish. But the world of Jewish rock greats is muc more extensive than that, including Malcolm McLaren (cool!), two members of Anthrax (really cool!) and Gary Lee Weinrib, known to non-family members as Geddy Lee of Rush.

Scott talks about meeting Geddy and Alex with his cousin Ron (with pic):

My cousin, Ron, has been a bassist and guitarist for many, many years and one of the big thrills of his life was meeting one of his musical heroes a few years ago....one Mr. Geddy Lee of Rush. You might have even heard of them before. They are sort of well known I understand. Ron is the tall one standing next to Geddy wearing a bootleg Rush fandom t-shirt and then there is some guy smiling next to guitarist Alex Lifeson. I asked him once what his bass playing style was and he said it was a combination of the influences of John Paul Jones, Paul McCartney and Geddy Lee. ... Both Geddy and Alex were very nice and down to earth.

I used to have one of those same shirts that he mentions. They were sold via the old National Midnight Star mailing list to celebrate Rush's 20th anniversary. The shirt has since disintegrated into nothingness because of overuse. :)

After a chance meeting in an airport Happy lusts after Geddy Lee but she can't quite decide why:

Most people know that I am a big RUSH fan---but most of you don't know that I have a soft spot for Geddy Lee.

Ever since I had a chance meeting at the Sac Airport... I have lusted after his mysterious ways. Before the airport--- He was just a homely man in the band I loved.

After the airport...

He was king--- The question is why?

Is it the shoes?

The hair?

The glasses?

Hard to say--- Perhaps it was the way he tossed his hair as he boarded the plane...

All I know is--- We need more RUSH--- they need to play near here again--- I need more Geddy

We all need more Geddy. :)
