UPDATE - 1/11@10:29AM: Reader RushFanForever found out some more about Alex's character from the filmmaker. Dr. Fig is a character made specifically for the film that; he is not in the book. He works in a mental hospital where Billy Boyd's character Woodsy is committed for a breakdown after consuming too much Ecstasy.

UPDATE - 1/9@2:38PM: Reader RushFanForever contacted the filmmaker and confirmed that Alex plays the part of Dr. Fig in the film.

Toronto filmmaker Rob Heydon recently completed shooting for his feature film adaptation of Scottish author Irvine Welsh's book Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance. From this Canadian Press article:

... the film stars Vancouver-born Kristin Kreuk of Smallville fame as Heather, who leaves her husband (Toronto native Dean McDermott) and dives into Scotland’s drug-filled rave scene of the 1990s.

Scottish actor Adam Sinclair (who is Kiefer Sutherland’s step-son-in-law) plays Lloyd, her love interest who’s also caught up in the nightclub world of dance, drugs and dealers.

Other cast members include Scottish star Billy Boyd (Lord of the Rings), Nova Scotia’s Stephen McHattie and Toronto funnyman Sean Cullen. Welsh also makes a cameo, which he recently shot in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. ...

Alex Lifeson is also among the cast according to the film's Facebook page, and can be seen pictured with Heydon on the set at this link. It's not clear exactly what Alex's role is in the film, but in the picture Alex looks to be dressed as a doctor of some kind. The film will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Thanks to Mr. Bill for the heads up.
